PlayStation Suite: Bringing PS gaming to your handset

PlayStation Suite is an all new initiative that is designed to bring PlayStation titles to Android devices. As of now, the PlayStation Suite is completely focused on Android bases devices such as smartphones and tablets and will allow users to play PS1 classics on the handheld devices. Whether the service will be launched on the Apple App store is not yet announced and according to popular belief, it will not happen any time soon.

The introduction of the PlayStation Suite is a move to take the PS experience to a wider base of customers. Although the strategy is a quite risky and bold done, it is an impressive concept and will be well received by many users of Android devices in the future.

As of now, the PlayStation Suite allows Android users to get their hands on PS 1 classics such as Syphon Filter, Cool Boarders 2, and Wild Arms are currently available for Android users to enjoy on their Android tablets or mobile phones. However, this service is available only to users of Android 2.3 and above. Users of Android Gingerbread or later versions have the ability to directly download all of the content directly on to their devices. The classic PS1 titles have been modified to be able to be played by making full use on the touch screen features.

All of the content offered by the PlayStation Suite will also be accessible on Sony’s successor to the PSP. The NGP, titled PS-Vita will allow users to play the PS1 available on the PlayStation Suite and all other games compatible with the device in a whole new way. The PS-Vita is titled an NGP or Next Generation Portable for many reasons. For starters, the PS-Vita is packed to the brim with the latest technology. The device is designed to take portable gaming in to a whole new level. Armed with a touch screen at the front and a touch sensitive pad at the front, the gaming experience on the PS-Vita is undoubtedly unlike any other experienced before. In addition, the device features two front and rear facing cameras, built in speakers and a microphone as well as dual analog sticks and a six axis motion sensor. The PS Vita is a fully fledged successor to replace the PSP and its compatibility with the PlayStation Suite is also a welcome feature.

The PlayStation Suite can be defined as an online PlayStation store that will fill your Android device with games. The service was announced at the same time as Sony PlayStation Certified which is a license program for the content of the games to be provided to portable devices that are running on Android Gingerbread and above. At the moment, titles for the PS1 are available on the PlayStation Suite. According to the company, PS1 is just the start and more will be offered soon.

The PlayStation Suite is a unique service that will allow its users to enjoy their favorite PS1 games on the go as well as to receive the gaming experience without investing on a version of the PlayStation.

NFC Enabled Handset from Samsung

Samsung has confirmed speculation and rumors that have been circling the Internet. A new version of their Galaxy S II handset with an added special feature is set to be released this year. The new Galaxy S II will come with Near Field Communication enabled.

Near Field Communication, or NFC Technology is a contactless and wireless method of transferring information between two objects. This technology is not much different to Bluetooth but is considered to be much faster. However, NFC has a much shorter range in comparison. The connectivity field is activated when two antennae are communicating via a magnetic field.

NFC technology comes with many benefits and applications. For instance, devices such as smart cards, credit and debit cards as well as mobile phones can come enabled with this technology. NFC enabled devices such as mobile phonespossess the ability to function as a means of offering identification by serving up personal information, to function as a bank card by serving bank account details or to function as a paid ticket to offer access to events.

With the enabling of NFC in the new Galaxy S II, Samsung appears to be aiming to eradicate the need to carry cash, credit cards or even a wallet. The NFC technology has also been detected by advertisers as a potential means to bring product information in to a handset.

A representative of the company has stated that the newest addition of technologyfrom Samsung will hit the shelves later this year. However, the exact release date is not yet confirmed. Since the current edition of the Samsung Galaxy S II carries a high end price of £500 in the UK, it is expected that the advanced version of the handset will carry a similar price tag or slightly higher.

Experts believe that Samsung’s latest technology additionmay just be the beginning of the decline of carrying cash.

Android Security Flaw Announced

Google has issued an official announcement stating that they are currently making attempts to fix a flaw in the security. The statement was made after a German research paper highlighted that Android phone owners were facing threats to security.

The research paper, published last week, stated that services such as Picassa, Contacts, and Google Calendar were at the risk of being leaked over Wi-Fi networks. Some of the Authentication tokens for these services are sent unencrypted. Therefore, users’ personal data has a high possibility to get stolen when these services are accessed over public Wi-Fi networks. At the moment, Google is attempting to fix this security flaw.

Experts believe that Google responded appropriately to the claim. Eric Schmidt, Google's executive chairman had stated earlier that the company was within the process of simplifying the mostly incomprehensible permission screen which appears while installing applications. According to Schmidt, the permissions are written by lawyers and are extremely complex descriptions of what the software will do. Users are pleased about the fact that Google is addressing to issues that create complications for them.

As for the security flaw, Google has admitted that certain circumstances could make personal information vulnerable to external parties. The official statement made by the Internet giant has acknowledged all Android users of the possibility of their personal information being accessible by third parties during certain situations. The security flaw is said to be effective for all Android devices except for those running on Gingerbread.

Google assures their users that the fixing of the security flaw will take effect globally within the next few days. As per the statement, user involvement will not be required for the fix to take effect. For the moment, users are advised to exercise care when sharing information across Wi-Fi networks.

Some experts believe that the tweet appears to be saying that the group has nothing to do with the attacks.
The attack was made known via email to the SEGA Pass users. The emails stated that they have identified unauthorized entry to the SEGA Pass database and that the breach had been isolated. The email added that they have launched an investigation to determine the amount of damage done. Users were advised to immediately change passwords. The request seemed to imply something serious as the password details on SEGA were stored encrypted.

Experts see SEGA’s immediate response and the request to provide additional security by changing passwords is admirable. The compromised information from the security breach includes email addresses and dates of birth stored within the SEGA database. According to a statement issued by the company, credit card details were stored elsewhere and were thus protected from the attackers.

SEGA is the latest victim of a long line of cyber attacks on multiplayer gaming communities that have been taking place for the past couple of months. Although LulzSec was involved in the hacking of several, much publicized high profile cyber attacks; they have made it clear that they are not involved in the attacks on SEGA in anyway.

Gamers, gaming companies, and experts are all highly concerned about the high frequency of recent hacking attacks.

Location Based Applications: Future of Smartphones

Kevin Lynch, the chief technology officer of Adobe has made a statement about his vision on the future of smartphones. According to his belief, the next step in to the future of smartphones involves location-based applications.

Lynch voiced his opinions at the Open Mobile Summit and made a demonstration of the technology on a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. The demonstration showed how the real world and virtual world can be linked and how smartphones and tablets will know the location of their users at all times to provide better services and functionality.

The concept is to allow users to make the most of their location by allowing them to choose applications that will have higher value based on the current location of the user. With this technology, the applications network will let users know about particular apps that will come in handy at the area they are currently at. The demonstration showed Lynch arriving at a museum to find an application that provided information about the artwork and how he was able to order food at a hotel through his tablet.

According to Lynch, today’s technology is not too far from the demonstrated concept. At the moment, Adobe is attempting to enable their software to run on mobile devices. Experts believe that the process will be a challenging one due to the fact that Adobe’s software is more functional in powerful personal computers rather than mobile phones and tablets.

Users had mixed opinions about the technology and its applications. While some users commented that it would make things easier for malware developers and spammers, others thought it was a great idea if proper security measures are employed. Kevin Lynch, however, is positive about the technology becoming a success in the near future.

Citibank Hacked

Latest news state that hackers had broken in to the online account site of Citibank and credit card details, account numbers, and email addresses have been compromised. According to a statement issued by Citigroup, about one percent of the credit card information of their customers has been viewed by the intruders.

Citibank boasts an impressive client base of over 21 million credit card customers within North America. The attack was detected when conducting a routine monitoring session. However, exact information on the number of accounts faced the breach were not yet revealed.

However, the information stolen includes a great deal of personal information with the potential to lead to identity theft. Among the compromised data were social security numbers, birth dates, card security codes and even card expiration dates as per the announcement made by the bank.

Sheila Bair, chair of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation commented on the matter. According to her statement, both the banks and federal regulators have to remain in constant vigilance to avoid situations such as this from repeating in the future. She further stated that the FDIC and other federal agencies are developing new rules to encourage banks to pay special attention to improve their online security.

However, the attack on Citibank is not the only attack of its kind to be reported within the last few weeks. One June 1st, Google Inc. stated that several personal Gmail accounts belonging to senior U.S. government officials and military personnel were attacked while broadcaster PBS confirmed that the network’s website was hacked on 30th May. The widely publicized attack on Sony’s PSN saw millions of users data compromised and an extended offline period followed by numerous crashes and glitches.

Sean Kevelighan, a spokesman for Citibank stated that they are currently contacting affected clients and are tightening their security to prevent future attacks.

Top 10 Web Security Threats - Part 1

The Internet and web are becoming increasingly vulnerable with the advancement of technologies and skills of the people who use it for wrong reasons. When compared to early stage hack attacks, recent methods of attacking are very much advance and complex. But there are some techniques used even today introduced some decades ago. Let’s have a look at the top 10 web security vulnerabilities in out list.

First - Unvalidated Input. The information that comes from the web browser is not validated by the web application. This way, a third party can alter the web request and pass incorrect or harmful information to the web browser.

Second - Broken Access Control. Even though lot of web applications have frameworks implemented for access control and role authentication, some of these rules are not used effectively in the web application. So mistakenly a regular user maybe assigned higher level of authority.

Third - Broken Authentication and Sessions management. As we know, if you log in to a web application, a unique session is created for you. If this sessions details are not protected correctly (by a technique such as encryption), some one can steal it and misuse. This way, attackers can compromise password, keys, session cookies etc.

Fourth - Cross Site Scripting (XSS) - A well-known web site that is trusted by end-users can be used by an attacker to transport an attack to the end user. By clicking a link of the trusted website, the end user actually executes a code written by an attacker in another web application or web site. This way, an attacker can disclose the session details, attack the end users machine and provide incorrect content and fool the end user.

Fifth - Buffer Overflows. This is one of the very common and familiar types of attack. This is not common only for web application but also for operating systems. For web applications, an attacker may send a chunk of data which crashes the web application and taken control of some of it’s processes. There are some programming and scripting languages that does not validate whether the data stream id too much and it can crash the web application (Ex: CGI, libraries, drivers and web application server components).
