SAAS is a business model that's been around for a while now, but one that many organizations still haven't recognized the potential of. Here's why you should follow in the footsteps of companies like SohoOS…

SAAS stands for 'Software as a Service' and this describes a particular type of business model where you are providing a service in the form of - you guessed it - software. In other words, you are providing someone with a product or service that runs itself online and that you can don't need to have any part in yourself other than for maintenance. Thanks to the cloud, and to the power of modern computers and browsers, it's possible to offer a range of tailored services directly to someone's PC that rely on strict code and don't require human intervention.

Examples of SAAS Business Models

There are many examples of this already which provide online services from the cloud which can be used by a variety of businesses. For instance there is SohoOS which is a 'micro business management' tool, there is RecruiterBox which of course is useful for recruiting staff for a company, and there's things like Salesforce which is a 'sales' application. My company recently shifted to ZenDesk for our support, ticketing and customer interaction. Even for niche areas like SEO, great people at SEOMoz have managed to do really well with their SAAS or cloud based offering.

All of these websites are interactive business-to-business solutions that allow you to run your business more easily or to enjoy a new feature. They do things like organizing data, bringing people together and giving you productivity tools such as spreadsheets and other financial modelling software. And then there are those that provide a service for consumers rather than businesses. These include things like video and editing software, like Spotify (a music platform) and like Google Apps. No matter your industry or niche there is probably a service you could provide that people would be willing to use.

Why SAAS?

If you have a dynamic piece of software such as contact management software, then this is something that you can charge for as a business. The old business model of course was to simply package that up in some cellophane and a box, and to then sell it for a premium price (you can pay $100 and more for a piece of productivity software and normally more than $40 for a game). This of course would work but it is open to some basic flaws. For one it means that your product is only sold once and a surprisingly small amount of buyers tend to bother with frequent updates. At the same time though it also means that your software can be easily copied, stolen and shared, and it is a slow way to sell with large overheads.

Alternatively by providing a web app or service online that anyone can use, you can allow your businesses to use your service without actually buying any physical item. They pay for registration and this not only makes them more likely to buy (as there is no large asking cost initially) but also makes them more likely to keep paying and to stay as a recurring customer into the future. They feel like they're getting a better deal, and you get a much bigger profit from them at the same time. You also keep your captive audience, and are able to deal immediately with any problems or gripes.

The Future

Only recently have 'web apps' become big news, and talk of the 'cloud' is seeing a lot of businesses clamouring to produce software that provides a service. The app stores on iPhone and Android are perfect examples of software that runs on the cloud, but ultimately you still need to buy each item individually. As internet connections and server powers increase ever more, we can eventually expect to stop downloading things onto their phones at all, and are likely instead to simply play them directly off the cloud - streaming software and games. And at this point we can start seeing new monetization methods including 'per use' payments and subscriptions that will make SAAS even more popular.

Get ahead of the game and create your online service now, and you will find that you only grow in success as time goes on. And small businesses who can't afford large software packages, or whole departments, will be a fantastic audience to tackle.

Supercomputers have been around for decades, though their definition has evolved at a much faster pace than that of the rest of the computer industry. While early supercomputers had less processing power than virtually any of the consumer grade high-end laptops for sale today, modern supercomputers have become processing behemoths. The supercomputers of today consist of thousands of machines that are fast in their own right, connecting them with an incredibly fast network in order to fully harness their power.

The result is a machine so fast that it can’t be realistically measured in gigahertz. Supercomputers do serve a functional purpose, though. Depending on who owns the computer, supercomputers are frequently used for things such as molecular modeling and simulations of nuclear explosions. Given their immense processing power, supercomputers are ideal for such large-scale simulations. What would take months or even years on a laptop takes just a few minutes on a supercomputer.

With so many resources required to construct a supercomputer, owning the fastest one is something that gives countries and companies bragging rights. Supercomputers that are new or upgraded are benchmarked to see where they rank. Currently, Japan has the world’s largest supercomputer.

Known simply as the K, Japan’s supercomputer features 548,352 cores. The machine is a joint venture of Fujitsu and a Japanese government body known as RIKEN. In terms of raw processing capabilities, it can perform 10 quadrillion calculations per second. This is a speed roughly equivalent to 10 petaflops. As if that wasn’t impressive enough, the Japanese government also made a recent pledge of $1.3 billion to improve the K further.

The K doesn’t exist simply to wow the rest of the world, though. It’s being used to solve some of the world’s biggest problems. Specifically, the Japanese government is using it to help better predict earthquakes and other natural disasters. Other purposes for the K include space exploration and drug development.

Although the K is currently the world’s leading supercomputer, that wasn’t always the case. Prior to the K’s claiming of the crown, China possessed the fastest supercomputer. The National Supercomputing Center in Tianjin featured a machine that consisted of more than 180,000 cores overall. Although it’s still an amazing machine, those 180,000 cores only produced about 2.5 petaflops of processing power. Like the K, its purpose centers on analyzing climate patterns and performing other large-scale simulations.

It will be decades before we see anything resembling the supercomputers of today in our homes. There are ways, though, to increase the computing power of your or your business’ machine. A machine in this category is referred to as a high performance computer or HPC for short. The Dell hpc relies on a series of nodes and proprietary software solutions. Although the HPC doesn’t rival the supercomputer, it does do an excellent job of increasing performance from a computer. Computers like the K shows just how much is possible when working with the most advanced computers of the modern era.

Network convergence involves the use of several communication modes within the same network. Examples of communication modes include telephone, data and video, all of which coexist efficiently in one network. This principle is alternatively known as media convergence.

The term convergence is basically used in the IT industry to refer to the network architecture and emerging technologies used to merge several communication services into one network. The communication services that used to exist as distinct media are merged on single devices using common interfaces. Convergence primarily involves the combination of computing, broadcasting and telecommunications services into the same digital bit-stream.

History of Network Convergence

Communication networks were originally designed to accommodate different communication modes independently. For instance, radio was meant for audio while television was meant for video. Such older types of media served passive audiences who could not make any interactions.

However, the merging of such communication modes such as voice, video and data has enabled interaction where the audiences can become active participants.

The origins of convergence go back to the development of mobile phone and Internet communications. As far as marketing is concerned, however, the term started to be used officially when service providers started offering combined mobile and fixed telephony packages.

Convergence is nowadays largely conducted on the Internet where different types of consumers use such services as Web surfing, texting, streaming media, VoIP, online gaming, videoconferencing and e-commerce.

Regulation

While telecommunication is usually regulated by the state, convergence has made it difficult to put clear-cut regulations on such services as VoIP, which merges telecommunication and information services. Since such technologies are still evolving fairly rapidly, it is not easy for regulating bodies to decide on the most appropriate measures to take and self-regulation is for now, the recommended course of action.

How Convergence Impacts Data Centers and Businesses

Convergence also applies to data centers where it involves the transportation of block-level storage and IP network traffic on a single physical network.

Convergence of storage and IP network traffic on the same Ethernet network is usually connected to server virtualization. It entails more than just merging traffic to lower capital costs.

Data centers can be converged in a number of ways, including:

• Convergence of the entire network, which requires a fully connected network with the capability to handle Fiber Channel and IP traffic on every port.
• Access layer convergence via an external network adapter to reduce necessary switches and cables.
• Layer 2 technology convergence where two physically separate networks are maintained while using the same type of data link (Layer 2) infrastructure to merge different traffic.
• Managed convergence where there is no need of using one physical network but requires the coordination of storage and IP traffic.

As the technology continues to grow, more people are expected to adopt the convergence of physical networks. This does not mean that hardware and software components will be merged.

The convergence of data centers is expected to reduce capital and operating costs because the number of required switch ports and network interfaces will be halved.

Challenges

Although convergence has many advantages, it also poses a number of challenges. The first challenge has to do with bandwidth requirements. The exchange of rich media content and use of more sophisticated applications put significant strain on network resources.

As far as data centers are concerned, indiscriminate application of convergence can lead to operations, availability and security complications. It needs careful designing to help in lowering costs without compromising on these issues.

The entire process of network convergence, right from the design to installation to maintenance, needs careful attention to reap the desired benefits.

A modern call center is complex and often chaotic. The need to multitask and multi-specialize is great, and that causes strong potential for inefficiency. In fact, with a hosted solution, a business does not even require a physical location. The host serves that purpose, and the network comprises satellites. These satellites may be small locations, but often, they’re individual agents working out of their own homes. The distributed approach allows the business to save on overhead, which they can then spend on higher-quality agents and specialists.

An ACD system is an integral component of making that possible. These sophisticated call-routing systems are at the heart of all call center solutions, whether they be hosted, owned, distributed or centrally located. They combine intelligent routing, skill-based routing and routing through user-defined parameters. Usually, the goal is to avoid wait times, but if such delays are necessary, the system can provide wait time estimates, marketing messages and even play music. Callers have options for self-service and voice mail, and the system is smart enough to prioritize the queue on many parameters beyond call time.

Lastly, another benefit to streamlining from modern technology is data collection, reporting and analysis. Today’s technology allows us to monitor the finest details of a call center, and then process that massive amount of data. By doing so, we’re able to see patterns emerge that would not have been otherwise apparent. The modern call center can then use these patterns to be proactive rather than reactive. Staying ahead of the curve is vital to the long-term efficiency of any complex call center.

The Nintendo DS, Nintendo’s answer to Sony’s PSP has given birth to four different versions of the original design. The latest to be released is the Nintendo 3DS and it is packed with the latest innovations of gaming.

The most prominent feature of the gaming console is the fact that it produces 3D images that don’t require glasses to be viewed. The Nintendo 3DS achieves this purpose through auto-stereoscopy, which creates 3D images by assigning different parts of its graphical output to different sections of the screen. Although the effect is quite an impressive one, it has also caused disorientation due to prolonged use. For those who are looking forward to play games that require close attention, the consequences may be quite sickening.In addition to that, it must be noted that moving the device about while playing results in the collapsing of the 3D effect. However, the effect can be adjusted all the way down to 2Dw with the aid of the 2D slider.

At first glance, the device is far from attractive and in comparison with non-3D compatible devices such as the PSP the Nintendo 3DS, the design seems archaic and would have users doubting its immense capabilities. However, the Nintendo 3DS comes packed with some serious technology. For instance, the 3DS is equipped with an accelerometer and a gyroscope for heightened motion sensing controls. Packed within its 74x134x21mm body is a Customized PICA200 graphics chipset. Although it is much less powerful than the likes of Nvidia and AMD, it is certainly adequate to produce images of impressive quality.

In addition to these features, the Nintendo 3DS comes with a 360 degree analogue pad and a home button which makes navigation much easier. The analogue pad, although not as precise as a stick controller, is smooth and comfortable and has a definite win over the PSP’s thumb damaging navigation button. The 3DS also offers a front facing camera of 640x480 to take 2D images as well as two identical cameras on the outside. The two cameras work together to take two pictures at the same time and to overlay them to create a 3D image. While the camera quality is not very impressive, it will definitely offer a novel experience and a great deal of unique possibilities when it comes to augmented reality gaming.

The 3DS also comes equipped with Wi-Fi for connectivity. The W-Fi function is not only limited to internet access and to download new games from the eShop but also as a method of exchanging data between neighboring devices. Although this is a welcome feature for most gamers, Street passing data is heavily in breach of copyright laws and is frowned upon by many gaming company.

In the end, the Nintendo 3DS is an impressive device. Although the design and aesthetics may not be ideal for most style conscious gamers, it is still a remarkable piece of technology released at the correct time when 3D compatibility is still in the spotlight. The initial appeal of the device lies in the 3D features but once the craze dies down, the device will still spark interest due to its control features and incredible graphics properties.

Canons’ EOS 600D is a delight for photography enthusiasts on the lookout for an affordable DSLR. Canon’s line of SLRs has been dominating the market since 2003, when the range was first launched. When it comes to the Canon EOS 600D, it shows very thin variation from the previous model in the range. The sensor, of 18 Megapixels is identical to that of the Canon EOS 550D, its predecessor. In addition, the DIGIC IV image processor, the 63-zone iFCL metering system as well as the 9-point AF system have also been recycled from the 550D.

However, the EOS 600D is not a complete clone of its predecessor. Quite a few noticeable changes are present in the all new design. For instance, the 3 inch screen is offered with the ability to swivel out of the body by 180° and to rotate by 270°. This feature alone offers users the ability to position and shoot videos at various different angles. The Canon EOS 600D is able to record full HD video at 1080P at different frame speeds of 24, 25 and 30 fps.

As for the external appearance, the Canon EOS 600D is very much similar to the 550D. But the 600D had been given several subtle modifications to make it appear more high end and to make it more usable. However, you will not receive a brand new AF system with the 600D. The AF system of the Canon EOS 600D is the same 9 point phase detect one from previous models where the nine points are grouped together at the centre of the frame to form a diamond. The AF point selection button is responsible for the focus selection. Although it is a decent system without fuss, it definitely feels a bit slow and outdated in comparison for similar cameras from other manufacturers.

The EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II kit lens incorporates a built in system to prevent shakes from upsetting the picture. Although the internal construction of the lens is the same, the lack of a USM motor makes up for several audible noises as the lens adjusts its focus.

The most important feature of a camera is undoubtedly, the image quality. Armed with the 63-zone iFCL metering system (the same since the EOS 7D) results in well exposed images regardless of the lighting condition.  The Canon EOS 600D delivers different picture styles such as Portrait, Landscape, Standard, Neutral and Monochrome which offers a satisfactory result. In addition the user defined modes allows them to edit contrast, saturation brightness and color tone as required.

In conclusion, the Canon EOS 600D offers very little new features in comparison with the 550D. The minor additions come at a considerably high price and are guaranteed to have users questioning whether they are worth an additional £150. On the other hand, it is a great camera which belongs to the moderate price range. Although the sensor is satisfactory and the picture quality and video are impressive, the overall performance is not entirely up to expectations.

The Sony HDR-TD10 a complex device offered in the form of a small and compact handy cam. However, in comparison to other HD cameras, it is larger and can even be defined as bulky. However, HD video is not the only innovative feature offered in the Sony HDR-TD10. You will also have the ability to shoot 3D images. The device comes equipped with two side by side lenses in the front. These two cameras make up for the bulk of the device as well as the ability to capture a 3D image.

Although it was called bulky, for a 3D capable camera, it is very well built and is perfect for extended use. As for the features the Sony HDR-TD10 offers 3D as its primary feature. You will find that this feature is easily accessible without the need to resort to complicated exercises such as swapping out lenses or calibrating them. Instead, the simple flip of a switch will allow you to switch between 2D and 3D according to your preference. When it comes to watching the captured 3D video, there is no need for those 3D glasses with the Sony HDR-TD10.
